reflection
the internet proved to be very effective information wise, whereas a host of book would have been much harder to research. the internet was able to provide me with the exact imformation i needed, promptly! if i were to have used books i would have had to read many chapters of many book to locate relevant information, which would have been almost impossible within school hours and would have been too much to take home, possibly to find that they did not have the information needed. Note taking from the internet was reltively easy. also, the internet was being cooperative whilst i was researching.
writing in the different styles was an interesting challenge, including the blog/reflection. i am certainly no used to writing in this style. after this unit grade 11 student should be ready for the end of year exams which are just around the corner.
Reflection
For the technological issue, I think I have known The Sims better than before. I get to know the features and online communities well. I was surprised that actually The Sims originated from a fire tragedy.
I was very tired in making this assessment, because I have to write in my own words, and I have to cite in the form of footnotes, which I am not get used to. I feel very exhausted but I also enjoy in making different types of text, especially in making the poster. Beside, The Sims is one of my favourite topics and I have an experience in playing The Sims itself. It’s a very interesting topic.
I'm glad that finally this assessment is finished, although I don't put much effort to it, since I have to do the other works in other subjects.
Assessment Reflection
Having a chance to work on technological issue for this English Assessment has also make me learn that in the world of communication as the major concern of the society right now, there are actually problems that are inevitable. As the time goes by, technology keeps improving itself and innovation and inventions become a trend. However, technology doesn’t only give positive impacts all the time. There are people out there that use this tool as a way of cheating others to gain personal benefit. Personally, I am concerned with this problem as I am also one of the many users of the web.
Another thing that I’ve learnt from this task is ways of presenting ideas. In academic writing that this topic wants to emphasize, I realized that for different purposes of text, there are also different ways of presenting the main points. For example when doing the essay on compare and contrast, I learned how to present the material in a more structured and organized way. I learned that by having only one focus in each paragraph, for example Paragraph 1 explaining about similarities and Paragraph 2 about differences, makes my essay looks more vivid and clear. However, there are still a lot of areas for me to improve my writing. This is what I’ve realized after turning in drafts on my essay and having my words corrected b the teacher in charge. As a conclusion, I’ve enjoyed doing this assessment and am eager to learn more about academic writing and global issues.
Mackinley 11.1 blog entry
There were four types of academic writing. First, we need to write a persuasive writing which we need to persuade people to believe what we believe. Second, we need to write a compare and contrast essays. We need to compare both of them and also find the similarities. This essay requires more time than the other because we need to do some research as well. Third, we need to write reaction and opinion essays. This essay may probably the easiest one because it doesn’t need to have some research. The fourth one is research essay. This essay need a little bit of research, but it was pretty fun doing this part.
Lastly, I was really happy that my work is all done. I really hope to get a better mark than last few assessments. I also would like to thank Miss Luara and Mrs. Karla for giving me this assessment. I am very happy to be able to write essays.

Me myself was particularly relax that day and I thought, "oh it’s just another assessment, I don’t have to start doing it now, right, I’ll get it done sometime later" and this kept going on for weeks and weeks. procastination. My one and only enemy I can never beat.
Around 5 or 6 days ago is then when it totally hit me that I had to write 5 essays in just a week. I knew my weaknesses in writing and so I knew how deeply in trouble I was going to be. Quickly I searched for the topic I am writing about, iPhone vs Blackberry; which turns out to be a very popular subject, something I didn’t know of until I read our classes’ blog.
So here I am finally finishing the very last essay of the third English assessment.
time of entry : 3.40 am
lesson? dont procrastinate. lets just hope that I could overcome this habit in the upcoming tasks
surprises? I didn’t think that my draft is going to be covered with all sorts of underlines and circles (thank you Miss Laura for showing the area that needed work)
what I can improve? what did I learn? just DON’T procrastinate. End of blog.
English Assessment 3 - Reflection - Kriska
Unit-wise I don’t really enjoy this academic writing as I never really enjoy things that are too structured. Carefully planning about what to write and then making an outline are some things that I don’t particularly enjoy doing. That’s why I can’t say that I’m proud of my partial essays, though I am quite confident with my complete essay. For me writing a complete essay that connects one paragraph with another is easier than writing the outline itself.
Choosing technology for the topic was, I think, a very good idea. Technology is a common thing that has become a part of our lives, and as a result this gives us the opportunity to delve deeper into the topic. An interesting thing I notice about my own topic, which is about Adobe Illustration and Photoshop, is that many designers and users always try to figure out which is the best graphic design software. It is rather amusing to see how many websites on the internet contradict each others. One website might say that Adobe Illustrator is the best, while other might say that it is the worst. Well, I guess it all came down to the users themselves.
Finally I’m done!
Assessment 3 English = Hell waste of my time because of the need to cite!

From this assessment, I learned much information about technological change in hand phones. I learned that these 2 sophisticated gadgets have their own specialties. The most important thing that I learned from doing this assessment is how to make a better academic writing. Although it's confusing and stressful, it taught me how to write better in English.
Using time more wisely is needed for this assessment. If we're just playing around, we will definitely have difficulties in doing this assessment. In doing this assessment, I didn't manage my time wisely. I have tried but there were many homework and tests in the past 2 weeks. Well, the most important thing is that I finished my assessment and I thought it was quite promising.
Grammar, Topic Sentences, and Thesis was very hard to do but I think that I have improved in these areas and most of all I finally know how to make a better academic writing like research, reaction, compare and contrast, etc.
Finally, Thank God that all my work is done. I hope that I will achieve a better mark in this assessment task 3. Last but not least, I would also like to thank Miss Laura and Mrs. Karla for keep teaching and explaining me things that I don't understand. Without both of you, I would probably have more difficulties in doing this assessment. Well, that's all that I wanna say in this short reflection. Peace out

Weapons technology seems to be a lot more complex than what it seems to be. During this unit, I’ve learned about background histories of various weapons ranging from stone age to modern age. Histories that relates with the inventions of firearms, fighter jets and not to forget the devastating weapon, atomic bomb. Besides histories, there is still more to explore such as the specific components of weapons. Furthermore, research on weaponry tells us about its damaging capability that it could produce. In addition, during this report I could also research and react to an argument. My argument is about people using guns irresponsibly. This reaction helps me to develop my critical thinking towards the argument. Weapons technology is indeed an interesting topic to do.
On the other hand, I’ve learned the academic writing as much as my personal topic. In this assessment we were asked to write four types of academic writing, which requires different skills for each of them. The partial essay is something new to me. I’ve learned much about focusing on thesis and topic sentences that gives clear direction, which is supported by several evidence. While in the visual text, I could expand my creativity in doing one of the academic writing. To be able to do various academic writings, it was actually challenging and fun at the same time.
My success is that I’m able to find an interesting topic. A topic which I really enjoy writing about it. My failure lies at the skills required for each academic writing, especially reaction text. I couldn’t write a really strong reaction towards the case. However, in the future, I would improve my skills in the academic writings by reacting more often towards an argument. So that in the future, I could master the information about my topic and also my academic writing skills.

For my topic, I chose Blackberry Bold and iPhone 3G. I have a really tough time in doing the research yet I learned a lot from it too. I have to search the information from a lot of different resources to make sure that it is valid. From this research, I learned that both Blackberry Bold and iPhone 3G are the most popular gadgets in the market. They both have their own strengths and weaknesses. Blackberry Bold are popular for the Blackberry Messenger and iPhone 3G are mostly used because it works like the iPod and even better it can be used for communication as well. I also discovered that Blackberry can cause addiction just like drugs! I also did a reaction partial essay, giving my experience of using a Blackberry Bold. From this, I had realized that Blackberry had become something essential in my life and it is starting to distract my studies. So I came to a conclusion that I need to manage my time wisely in order to maintain my grades in school. From this assessment, I have learnt different types of academic writing. The most difficult one I would say will be writing a partial essay. But then by learning how to write a partial essay, it made me realized that writing essays will be so much easier when you have an outline as your guide. The most enjoyable task from this will be creating a persuasive visual text. I have a lot of fun in designing my poster and learning how to use adobe Photoshop as well.
I believe that I could do a much better job in the future and I have learnt that procrastinating is not good. I would like to thank Miss. Laura and Miss. Karla for giving me the opportunity to learn such valuable lessons (:

Internet For Students
In this unit, we students learn about Academic Writing which consist of four types:
- First, comparison/ contrast, we learned to see and analyze the differences or similarities between two texts.
- Second, research, we learned how to find the right and reliable resource and compose it into a good research paper.
- Third, persuasive, we learned how to convince readers to believe or agree in what we said.
- Fourth, reaction/ opinion, we learned how to share our thoughts, judgment and our point of view on a case or argument.
During the learning process of this unit, I found that research was the hardest one because you need to carefully cite the resource and also you need to determine whether the source can be trusted or not. The easiest one would probably be opinion/ reaction, because we only need to share what we think and find evidence to back it up.
At the end of learning this unit, we were asked to use all four types of academic writing to make essays and text of a topic given, Technological Issue. For example: comparison between Macintosh and Windows, research about Blackberry, persuade the readers that using Internet is good, to give opinions towards the increasing use of Facebook.
I choose about the “Impacts of Internet on Education”. From that, I learned about the disadvantages or benefits that the Internet had affect the Education these days. The benefits are that it’s easier to search for information, able to discuss problems through forums. While the disadvantages are hard to manage time, can cause addiction and others.
Overall, I think this unit about Academic Writing was quite fun because you get to experiment with different types of writing and also you get to learned about the technological issue from the assessment task.

I chose Laptop and Notebook for my topic because it interested and I wanted to find out the differences. I got so many difficulties when searching some resources. Many people said that laptop was called notebook. However, I learned that Laptop is not same like Notebook. Notebook was smaller and weaker than Laptop. Laptop has a complete provider rather than notebook. I learned many things from this topic and noticed that people need technology to live.
From academic writing, I learned how to make an excellent essay. However, I can not make an excellent essay, but I got some improvements. When I make the essay, I thought this academic writing is useless and nothing will change. But when I finished it, I read it again and I was so proud. I can make it and it was done. It was my own essay and I make it maximally.
Around 1 month, I learned that I have to use time wisely. Truly our teachers gave us enough time to do it. But I throw many chances that they gave to me. I used all chances to playing around and make another work that I was not important at all.
The conclusion is I learned many things from this assessment. Thanks to our teachers that gave me this assessment. And finally I knew many important things from this assessment.

The assessment has not only brought me burden but it has also brought me important information. It told me how abusive Blackberries can be and how it has affected many teenagers. Most importantly, it has taught me to be more caution in handling the devices so that I will not be getting the “Blackberry Thumb” disease.
Finally, thank God it’s all over and I hope this will be the first and the last time I’m posting a blog (I’m not a big fan). Have fun reading! Cheers.
Reflection of the assessment - Geoff
I feel that this assessment is actually quite fun, with the exception of the sheer amount of things we have to write about. Writing the essays were slightly challenging, as I've never really wrote a detailed outline, nor write a reaction type essay, let alone design a visual/multimedia text for persuasion. I like designing the visual/multimedia text, because I like to tinker around with Photoshop or graphic editing programs. Suffice to say this assessment will be my favorite and also my most hated assessment to date.
Writing about video games were not as easy as I'd thought it would be, I was too ambitious at times, and aimed at unrealistic goals. This assessment has taught me to be more realistic when making choices, it also taught me not to decide base on personal preference. One of my friends knew about this already, and told me this: “You're gonna hate video games after this”. I almost did and was severely annoyed when I realize what he said s true.
Just today, I realize that I procrastinate to much. This is when I remembered something. There is a picture which says “PROCRASTINATORS UNITE.......” and a fist below the sentence. Below the fist however it says “tomorrow”. It made me realize that I should get my bum to work and start taking things more seriously.
EDIT: noticed after printing this reflection that the title spelled assment not assessment lol, sorry about that.
Assesment Task 3: Blog Reflection
It is human nature to prioritize living in the world as communities. In our post modernist world, the rapid technology growth enables social networking site creations such as MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter. These networking sites were created with good intentions, that is, to bring the whole world as one. People from around the globe are now connected with just a few clicks away with a vast array of servers available online. Technology has enabled us to do things that we had never been able to do.
However, this exponential growth of technology is abused in the form of cyber bullying, the act of slandering and harassing people online behind the keyboards over the internet. The internet use enables cyber bullies to spread false allegations with little or no credibility online, embarassing the victim in front of countless viewers. Using Instant Messaging services, bullies could gang up against one victim.
Cyber bullying causes its victims to feel pressured and frustated, as if they are confined and that they cannot escape or get help. If cyber bullying is not stopped immediately, it could lead to suicide (known as bullycide) and school shootings which could take up to 30 lives in just a few hours.
However, in my opinion, it is unfair that cyber bullies must be completely held for account for their actions; some bullies must have their own reasons. We do not know for sure if the bullies themselves are the victims of domestic violence or abuse. We do not know for sure if the bullies are pressured by the crowd to bully others. We do not know for sure if the bullies themselves are having troubles with their lives, and that they needed to vent their anger and frustrations, but in a wrong way. They do not realize what they are doing. The blame lies on their family, their friends, and their environment too.
But cyber bullying of any kind is wrong and the causes it brings are very alarming. Experts are finding solutions to stop and prevent cyber bullying. Unfortunately, it is impossible to eradicate cyber bullying since we cannot track down where the bullies came from. The only way to stop cyber bullying comes from within the bullies themselves. And for that, I hope our society raise awareness for cyber bullying, and the effects it may cause on the victims.

I feel extremely happy to finally finish this assessment. I think this assessment is very unpredictable. At first, I thought that I would be able to do this assessment in two days or so. To my surprise, it needs about 9 hours to get all of the things done. Now I realize that I should stop postponing my works.
A very important thing that I learned from doing this assessment is how to stay focused on one task and try my best to stay away from any distractions. By placing my cell phones far away from me and keeping them on silent mode, it’s proven that I can concentrate pretty well on my assessment. I also learned that essays that you think is good enough may not be okay for others, especially teachers. I’ve turned in 3 drafts for my compare and contrast complete essay, but none of them had shown any good signals for good grades. It is very frustrating, of course.
Consistency is needed for this assessment. If you’re not consistent with your topic and love to procrastinate, then you may face a lot of difficulties in making all of the assignments. The good news is I’ve been very consistent today. I have tried my best to keep on researching for OHPs and LCD projectors, although their data are hard to find. Although my assessment is not the best and may not be perfect, I’ve put my best effort to complete all of the tasks. I personally think that I have succeeded completing my third assessment.
I think I have improved in certain areas; topic sentences, word choices, and types of academic writing. I am now able to insert a topic sentence that connected to the paragraph. I’ve improved in choosing different words so that the essays do not sound tedious. I finally know that there are different types of academic writing, and most importantly, in know how to make such writings.
Overall, though there are many difficulties in making this assessment, I am very satisfied to have all of my tasks done. Thanks to Miss Laura and Ma’am Karla for checking my drafts and explaining the things that I don’t understand for the assessment. Hopefully both of you would enjoy reading my essays! :)

Hotmail had improved during these last few years. I have been using Hotmail instead of Yahoo my whole life, because I saw that Hotmail was more interesting to use, however, it never occurred to me that Hotmail was in fact the most popular Email service today. From this assessment, I also found out that Hotmail was not always like today. It had so many improvements. The original Hotmail version was nowhere like today's, where there is also Windows Live brand combined with it. Hotmail has evolved. It does not only provide email services, because it created Windows Live Messenger, for instant messaging. Hotmail has truly helped changed the perspective of communication.
I learned that it is quite hard to avoid plagiarism in academic writing, because putting in all the sources hard. Academic writing requires footnotes and bibliography, where a lot of information regarding the source is needed. I also found out that putting thought into a formal writing is hard. These last few years, I have written essays, but usually it is mostly fictional. I learned more on how to convert thoughts into formal essays.
After I finished all the essays, I feel most proud of my comparison and contrast essay, because I feel the essay is the most structured among the others. I also referred to the dictionary and thesaurus to find the most appropriate words and jargons in the context. I think I can still improve a lot from organization and finding more interesting vocabulary.
Christel P/11.1>>English Reflection
It is quite shocking when Ms. Laura told us about the Assessment 3 task, which is we were told to make 5 different types of writing about the technology nowadays. So, for the topic, I choose about 2 online manga sites, OneManga and MangaFox. Thanks to this assessment, I have learned more about online manga, which not only for reading, but an online manga can bring other disadvantages and advantages. Also that people can give their opinion and insult one of the online manga, by giving fake information or scared people by telling a statement without evidence to support.
I choose to do the Comparison/Contrast with the visual/multimedia text, which I make a power point slide for it. I’m so proud of this text, because I make it for one whole day; where I do the other 4 texts only in one day, Haha. Just because I made it longer than the other texts, I choose it as the best text from the others. But still, I need to do my best for the essay. Why? It’s because my English is not that good (you can realize it when you read this) and I can’t make a good essay. So, after this assessment, I must do more writing exercise and about making good essay by using correct grammar and vocabulary.
Actually the time that was given for this assessment is quite long enough, but I didn’t use it wisely. I can’t manage my time of both playing around and do the assessment. So, because of my lack time management, I haven’t finished my assessment; although it already 9.00 pm. I’m so dead. But, even though I can’t manage my time wisely, I did my best of making each type of the text and giving up my ‘playing around’ time to do this assessment, which it was my responsibility for playing around too much and wasting the given time. Thank you and I'm sorry if there is some word that you don't like.

Another thing that I learned is that writing an academic writing is often very useful. It gives us more information about the topic of what we are writing about, and it is also easy to understand. In academic writing, people could use many different text types to make it seems fun and interesting to read. In this assessment, I learned how to be creative in my writing. It's not about how perfect our writing has to be this assessment, but it's about how much effort we put into it. I learned to write creatively so that it will looks more appealing and easy to understand for others to read, because that's what an academic writing is for.
In my assessment, my topic was about iPods and Walkmans. I compared and contrasted those two devices. I was researching about iPods and Walkmans, and I found out more things that I had never known before. The more I researched the more things I learned. The most important thing that I learned is that technologies bring a lot of effect to the world, starting from the change of people’s habits. Technologies are also important for our daily lives, because people depend on this in their lives.
In conclusion, this assessment has given me a lot of work to do, yet I learned many important things from it and I finally finished it! =)
Felix T. S 11.1 - English Reflection
This is my first blog post ever, and might be my last. Assessment Task 3 of English subject is quite unique, if I compare it to earlier assessment task 3. For the first time in my life, I have to write while using the standard of academic writing—which needs good paragraph organization and structural thinking. You may think of me as a really disorganized person, for fellow students of 11.1 classes, just try looking at my bag.
I learned many things from doing the 3rd assessment—whether it is a matter of content or a matter of structural organization. The first thing I will be discussing about is the structural organization. If you are reading this, you might (or will) notice that my English is not perfect at all. In fact, it was highly disorganized! Yes, I admit that this have been my problem since the first time I have been doing an English writing. I have trouble with sentence organizing, grammar, and punctuation. My problem is not actually in deciding what is right or what is wrong, but I tend not to re-read my work for reasons that even I cannot comprehend. Other people, including my instructors and friends, always said to me that I never value my own work; and if I reflect to myself, that might be true. I tend to one day just randomly writing a story or an essay, showing it to somebody, then ripping it into two, scraping it inside a trash bin; just because it doesn’t put up to my own expectations. And this assessment task really helps me to value my own work. For once, my trash bin is still empty—until this very minute I am writing this. I think this happens because I am writing in a short deadline. In less than a month, I am expected to write one full essay, some partial essays, a blog post for a reflection, and a visual/multimedia piece that can be viewed and seen in more ways than one.
Content-wise, I choose the world of video gaming. Since my full essay is a persuasive one, I wrote about “Violence in video games and its effects to humans”; which is said to be a recurring problem in video gaming. While everything is always related to violence (try mentioning one thing that is not related to violence at all, if you have something to say on this one), video games take it to a much higher level. This is because video games are a type of media; same as newspapers, television shows, and radio podcasts. But, of course video games still keeps the highest record of crimes. Even some people voiced their opinion as anti-video games (take for example Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli, who is an anti-video game). Why? As explained in my full essay, most video gamers are teenagers, who are suffering from raging hormones, based on a research; and if they cannot control their emotion well; they will tend to be more violent and destructive. I learned a lot about different sides, some that are saying that video games can enhance a student’s imagination and creativity; and Pope John Paul II said that games helped people make friends.
That is all I wanted to say in my reflection. I am sorry if I sounded a bit arrogant in this reflection; it’s just that I am not proficient on expressing my feelings.

According to several sites, BlackBerry is one of those hi-tech handheld devices that are capable of changing the communication habits of its users. As evidence, it can be seen that most teenagers at present are more comfortable with typing than oral speaking. This trend is then supported even more by the presence of BlackBerry Messenger which allows its users to be constantly connected to any chat log started by anyone in the contact list. However BlackBerry may have some negative impacts such as causing cancer and by being another technological distraction. By doing the compare and contrast essay, I know now that even if BlackBerry Storm and iPhone 3G have their differences but they are still the same in one way or another.
I have also learnt a lot in terms of academic writing. During this whole process, I have experienced writing different types of essays. I have also found out some new things that I did not know before such as how to write a partial essay. This task also enlightens me to a whole new concept of writing. Now I know a wider range of text types and know how to make one too. The teachers have also given me some inputs on which parts should I focus on more so that I can correct my mistakes.
Even if in certain occasions I have failed to create my best work but there is always a room for improvements. Recently I found out that I should practice more in writing according to the topic sentence of a paragraph. I also need to read more in order to generate more sophisticated vocabularies. The most important lesson that I have learnt is that I should start doing the assignments earlier instead of starting at the last minute.
I personally believe that I can do much better and be more attentive in the near future. Thank you Ms. Laura and Ms. Carla for letting me learn these important lessons.

Technology has both advantages and disadvantages to our life. For example, now we can do presentation from our hand phone and easily connect to them through the projectors. We can also open the Internet using our hand phone to download attachment from email and so much more. That is one advantage of technology. The disadvantage is that technology causes global warming in this world. Because of hand phones, Internet, or all devices that are using satellite cause global warming because the signal may caused the depletion of ozone layer and hence, it allows the sun to shine directly to the earth and caused the global warming.
Technology is quite important in our daily life. Without Internet, hand phones, email, or television; we could not get information easily, we could not communicate with friends easily and also, we could not learn from the Internet. So I think that technology is really important for our daily life now. I hope that technology will be better and better and I also hope that technology can save us from the global warming issue somehow. Thank you for reading my reflection. I apologize if there is something that I wrote is against your opinion.

PowerPoint from June 5
PLAGIARISM!
- If the IDEAS came from another source, it needs a footnote. (Without footnotes, it's plagiarism.)
- If the WORDS came from another source, it needs quotation marks and a footnote. (Without footnotes and quotation marks, it's plagiarism.)
- BE SAFE, NOT SORRY!
General Advice
- Thesis statements that are facts are not good. A thesis statement should be a claim, not a fact.
- Topic sentences that don't provide direction for the paragraph are not good. Everything in the paragraph should relate to the topic sentence.
- Paragraphs in the partial essay should be paragraphs that belong in the essay, not summaries of the essay. (Avoid introductions and conclusions and write body paragraphs instead.)
- Paragraphs in the partial essay should have footnotes (if needed). If not, it's plagiarism.
- Don't state the obvious.
- To fix unclear sentence structure, read your essay out loud to someone else to see if he/she understands
- Formatting: 1.5 spacing, 12 point font, A4 paper, readable font, name at the top
Reaction/Opinion Advice
- Not reacting to anything specific is not good. (If your topic is a product, consider reacting to a review of that product.)
- Give an opinion not just information.
- Organize clearly.
Sample Reaction/Opinion Organization
I. Intro
- Background information about what you're reacting to.
- Sample Thesis: "So-and-so" has good points about "such-and-such," but I think...
- Sample Thesis: This article says "such-and-such," and I agree/disagree because..
III. Your reaction (using your personal experience as evidence)
IV. Conclusion
