This Assessment Task 3 had been very tiring for me. To be honest, I did not manage my time wisely and ended up procrastinating. However, I learned a lot after a great deal of research. I had always been interested in Psychology, and the topic I chose gave me the chance to explore deeper into the sociological explanations of the human nature. From a technological point of view, I have learned that technology has become very prominent in our daily lives, and it has affected us, both positively and negatively.
It is human nature to prioritize living in the world as communities. In our post modernist world, the rapid technology growth enables social networking site creations such as MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter. These networking sites were created with good intentions, that is, to bring the whole world as one. People from around the globe are now connected with just a few clicks away with a vast array of servers available online. Technology has enabled us to do things that we had never been able to do.
However, this exponential growth of technology is abused in the form of cyber bullying, the act of slandering and harassing people online behind the keyboards over the internet. The internet use enables cyber bullies to spread false allegations with little or no credibility online, embarassing the victim in front of countless viewers. Using Instant Messaging services, bullies could gang up against one victim.
Cyber bullying causes its victims to feel pressured and frustated, as if they are confined and that they cannot escape or get help. If cyber bullying is not stopped immediately, it could lead to suicide (known as bullycide) and school shootings which could take up to 30 lives in just a few hours.
However, in my opinion, it is unfair that cyber bullies must be completely held for account for their actions; some bullies must have their own reasons. We do not know for sure if the bullies themselves are the victims of domestic violence or abuse. We do not know for sure if the bullies are pressured by the crowd to bully others. We do not know for sure if the bullies themselves are having troubles with their lives, and that they needed to vent their anger and frustrations, but in a wrong way. They do not realize what they are doing. The blame lies on their family, their friends, and their environment too.
But cyber bullying of any kind is wrong and the causes it brings are very alarming. Experts are finding solutions to stop and prevent cyber bullying. Unfortunately, it is impossible to eradicate cyber bullying since we cannot track down where the bullies came from. The only way to stop cyber bullying comes from within the bullies themselves. And for that, I hope our society raise awareness for cyber bullying, and the effects it may cause on the victims.
